Shankar Ramachandran, an educationist, moved from a corporate career as a chartered accountant to educating children. He has a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Mumbai (Bombay) and a Master’s degree in International Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame along with fellowships in teaching and learning from the United Kingdom. He has also worked as a journalist for major newspapers in India.

Shankar has been teaching in schools in India since 1992 and has created a unique reading program for children called Spells, which takes a holistic approach to reading and learning. It involves parents, and addresses the emotional as well the cognitive element of learning to read. Shankar’s method involves parents and encourages children to learn to read at early ages so that they can then go on to read to learn at higher grade levels. He is currently working with Imagic Foundation to use his unique method to encourage and foster reading and language learning skills in primary schools that serve children and families from low-income urban slums in Mumbai.

Shankar is also an avid cyclist and has cycled in different parts of India.
